South Devon's beautiful coastline has been officially ranked as a world heritage site by UNESCO, ranking it up with the Grand Canyon and Great Barrier reef as one of the world's great wonders. The designated area stretches from Orcombe Point at Exmouth in Devon to Old Harry Rocks in Dorset, and begins at Exmpouth only 20 miles from Springfield Holiday Park. Orcombe point and Geo-needle
The site has been recognised not only for its beauty, but also because of the 250 million year old rock strata which come form the Triasic and Jurassic periods. Some of the cliffs here are from a red rock which dates back to when the area was a desert - hard to believe in southern England! The whole of this section of the coast is walkable, being part of the massive south western coastal path which encircles the entire Devon and Cornwall Peninsular. The start of the UNESCO site is marked by a 'Geo-needle' at Orcombe point. The Jurassic Coast near Exmouth |
